June 14 Presentation

Title:  Denver’s Community Health Assessment: Using Maps to Describe the Health of a Community

Presenters (Denver Health):  Emily McCormick, Kirsten Wall, Michele Shimomura, Theresa Mickiewicz

Abstract:  In 2011, Denver Public Health and Denver Environmental Health collaborated with community stakeholders to conduct a community health assessment (Health of Denver 2011). Maps were used throughout the report to describe disparities in Denver on 14 health topics, including the demographics of Denver, neighborhood population change, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, infant deaths, HIV rate, food deserts, built environment, pediatric lead levels, suicides, tobacco sales, and cancer. This presentation will focus on the process of the community health assessment and data sources used to develop maps. It will describe how the maps were developed and how these maps are being used by stakeholders.

The Colorado Department of Public Health is located just East of Colorado Blvd. on Cherry Creek Drive South at 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver, CO 80246.  Free parking is available in visitor spaces.

Since 2002, the Colorado Health GIS User Group (CHUG) has been co-sponsored jointly by Deborah Thomas at UCD and Mark Egbert at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as a forum for anyone interested in health GIS applications in both research and practice.

If you have any questions about attending please contact Mark Egbert, GIS Coordinator, CDPHE or Deb Thomas, Dept. of Geography, UCD.

We look forward to having any professionals, students, or faculty interested in learning more about the application of GIS in Public Health in attendance.
